The Red Ledger’s Doug Laman discusses the top most anticipated movies of summer 2014.

Doug Laman, Movie Critic

The signs of summer are already here, and perhaps the most prominent sign is that a multitude of summer movies are already being hotly anticipated by cinema lovers and casual moviegoers alike. With that being said, here’s a look at 10 films getting a lot of attention.

10. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (August 8): Look, I’m not going to give you some in-depth analysis telling you that this new incarnation of the reptilian heroes is gonna be Avengers good, but that trailer was surprisingly well done compared to all the negative hype the film received beforehand. Again, there’s still plenty of flaws (I’m no fan of Johnny Knoxville voicing Michelangelo for instance) but I’m weirdly excited about seeing how this one turns out.

9. Transformers: Age of Extinction (June 27): We’re four movies into this one and the dichotomy between man and machine feels as repetitive and….DID I JUST SEE A ROBOTIC T-REX?!?!?!?! Yeah, OK, this could be the perfect mindless action film for the 4th of July (the presence of Kelsey Grammar, Stanley Tucci and Mark Wahlberg also helps some). Darn it Michael Bay, looks like you got me hooked again.

8. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May 2): Spidey continues his adventures after a surprisingly great first movie to combat more bad guys, more drama and a lighter tone. Embracing the more outlandish aspects of Spider-Man seems to be make for a more exciting adventure, while the cast & crew (namely, Twitter fiend Marc Webb) have such enthusiasm for the web-crawler that it’s hard not to get excited for this one.

7. Boyhood (July 11): Richard Linklater loves to direct movies using time and Ethan Hawke as principal factors, leading to terrific results. Now, this movie, which has been shot over 12 years, chronicles a boy’s journey of growing up in a way cinema has never previously explored. Really, this one looks to do some really extraordinary things with filmmaking that just boggles my mind. Richard Linklater, never change.

6. How To To Train Your Dragon 2 (June 13): The second part in what’s being envisioned as a sprawling trilogy, this newest adventure of Hiccup and Toothless raises the emotional stakes. I absolutely adored the first How To Train Your Dragon and I’m really hoping this one manages to deliver on all the promise it’s plotline contains (a plotline that’s practically spoiled in the newest trailer, so be cautious when watching it).

5. X-Men: Days of Future Past (May 23): Despite making $350 million and getting the best reviews of the entire franchise, X-Men: First Class still doesn’t get enough respect. Hopefully, this sequel will make people realize just how good that movie was, as this newest mutant adventure tosses those 1960’s characters with the many characters featured in the original X-Men trilogy, including Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The huge scope is already enough to get me interested, although more Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart shenanigans just sweetens the pot.

4. 22 Jump Street (June 13): At this point, I’d probably watch a movie featuring a rock sitting in a field of grass for two hours if it had directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller in charge. Between The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, they have a knack for great humor and even greater characters, and the extremely tongue-in-cheek tone conveyed by the trailer shows that these guys haven’t lost a beat in making this sequel. Bring it on guys.

3. Dawn of The Planet of The Apes (July 11): The saga of Caesar chronicled in 2011’s masterpiece Rise of The Planet of The Apes should have been a joke, but instead wound up being touching, exhilarating and surprisingly complex. This next entry goes darker with a new cast of humans having to deal with this colony of apes. Tossing in new cast members Jason Clarke, Judy Greer and Gary Oldman with the horrendously underrated Andy Serkis makes this a sequel that looks simply amazing.

2. Godzilla (May 16): Trailers have an uncanny ability to leave a mark on us and help shape the public’s very perception of a film. For Godzilla, that’s an extremely good thing as the trailer for this one is many, many things, but most of all it’s scary, in a very brutal way I never thought a Godzilla movie could be. They’ve got a great cast here (including Walter White himself, Bryan Cranston) and an atmosphere that taps into our modern day fear of natural disasters, but it’s the promise of the unbelievable awesomeness Godzilla will undoubtedly unleash on us all that really makes me excited for this movie.

1. Guardians of The Galaxy (August 1): You’ll have to wait until August to see the latest feature film from Marvel Studios, but it looks like it’ll be more than worth the wait. Taking an obscure comic and turning it into a major feature film is gutsy enough, but to do so with the excellent cast & crew on hand should be rewarded with a frenzy of cheers. Director James Gunn (whose last film had Dwight Schrute brutalize criminals in a red supersuit) has five people, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax The Destroyer (Dave Batista), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) take down cosmic evil. A terrific supporting cast (John C. Reilly, Benicio Del Toro and Glenn Close are also on hand), combined with some sci-fi visuals that just boggle my nerdy mind, make this not just an anticipated movie, but one I’m obsessively craving. August 1 feels like an eternity away, but if Marvel Studios unparalleled track record is any indication, it’ll be more than worth any wait.

And just as a minor reward for getting through all that, here’s three trailers for three more movies I’m looking forward to:

Begin Again (July 4th)

Jupiter Ascending (July 18th)

The Expendables 3

And of course, the sequel you all demanded…
